On May 17th, 2016, the first Mental Health Policy was launched. The purpose of the policy is to provide a benchmark to measure goals set for quality mental health provision in the country.

KAWE officials were present since Epilepsy was one of the conditions discussed. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it takes third place of conditions requiring medical assessment incase of:
Convulsive fits;

  • followed by incontinence
  • tongue biting
  • loss of consciousness

After the fit;

  • Confusion
  • Abnormal Behaviour
  • Headache
  • Weakness in one side of the body.

With an estimation of 20-40% of patients reviewed in primary care having one or more mental disorders, the policy has come at  the right time. Otherwise the burden of mental health care could escalate to inescapable heights.

“The is no health without mental health,” the Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Cleopa Mailu mentioned.
