Seizure First Aid

Knowing how to respond during a seizure can help prevent injury and save lives. Most seizures stop on their own, and calm, correct first aid is usually all that is needed.

STAY · SAFE · SIDE

What To Do During a Seizure

  • Time the seizure from start to finish
  • Place something soft under their head
  • Move objects away to prevent injury
  • Gently guide them to the floor

Pro-Tip: Speak calmly and reassuringly as the seizure ends. Loosen tight clothing around the neck to assist breathing.

What NOT To Do

  • Do NOT put anything in their mouth
  • Do NOT restrain their movements
  • Do NOT give food or water
  • Do NOT leave them alone

Note: A person cannot swallow their tongue during a seizure.

After the Seizure: The Recovery Position

Once the shaking stops, gently turn the person onto their side. This helps keep the airway clear and prevents choking.

When To Call Emergency Services
  • Seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
  • Another seizure starts immediately
  • The person is injured or pregnant
  • Trouble breathing afterward
  • Seizure happened in water
  • It is their first known seizure

First Aid for Different Types

Absence / Focal Aware

Stay nearby, time the event, and offer reassurance until they are fully aware.

Focal Impaired Awareness

Gently guide away from danger (like stairs or traffic) and stay until awareness returns.

Action Plan

Learn their specific seizure action plan if they have one. Education reduces fear and saves lives.
